Calming Blankets Mattress Topper Review
Has your mattress seen better days? Does it sag, feel lumpy and uneven? Perhaps your mattress is too firm and you’re looking to add a degree of plushness to it. A mattress topper may be just what you need to elevate your sleep experience.
In this review, we’ll look at the newly launched and very competitively priced Calming Blankets mattress topper. While it may be a new offering in the Aussie market, it comes from the stable of Calming Blankets – the most popular weighted blanket brand in Australia. So naturally, there are high expectations.
We’ll go over the pros and cons of this topper and who we think it’s best suited for.
I think Calming Blankets mattress topper is great for anyone looking to make their bed a bit more comfortable. Maybe you want to soften your existing mattress, add some extra plushness or are looking for a breathable topper to keep you cool during summer nights. If any of these sound like you, I recommend giving Calming Blankets mattress topper a try.
For testing purposes, I had placed the topper on the firmer side of the Peacelily latex mattress, which feels about 7/10 on the firmness scale. After putting on the topper, the mattress felt about 6/10. So it’s safe to say it had softened the mattress by a decent amount.
How does it feel?
The topper adds a soft layer of cushioning, giving you a feeling as if you’re sleeping on a fluffy or airy surface. Sleeping on the topper feels like you’re swaddled in softness rather than engulfed, unlike memory foam toppers. I would like to compare sleeping on the topper to sleeping on a thin, soft pillow or a fluffy cloud.
Drawbacks but not deal-breaker:
On the downside, the topper does offer decent pressure relief and support but not as much as you would experience on a memory foam topper. The Ecosa memory foam topper is a better option for those who need more pressure-relieving and contouring support.
While back and stomach sleepers should do fine on the topper, above-average weighted side sleepers may find that the topper doesn’t provide adequate support in the hip region.
Those who suffer upper body or shoulder pain should also do well on the topper, but those with lower back pain may want to look for a firmer topper or memory foam topper like Ecosa. It goes without saying always consult your GP or qualified medical professional if you have any ongoing pain to rule out any serious underlying issues.
If you’re looking for a mattress topper that significantly alters the feel of your mattress, or if your mattress is too saggy, you may want to consider other options, such as replacing your mattress or getting a thicker mattress topper.
Who may like the Calming Blankets Mattress Topper?
Who may not like the Calming Blankets Mattress Topper?
Tl;dr: All in all, I think the Calming Blankets mattress topper is a great choice for those looking for an affordable way to make their bed more comfortable. It’s hypoallergenic, machine-washable and comes with a hassle-free return policy.
The Calming Blankets mattress topper is 1.1” thick and comes with a stretchable skirt that fits mattresses up to 15” deep. It goes over the mattress just like a fitted sheet and ensures the topper stays in place and doesn’t bunch up or shift during the night. This is a big plus as most traditional toppers with elastic bands tend to slide and move around quite a bit.
The topper is filled with what the brand refers to as “high-tech fibre fill” which is nothing but ultra-thin microfiber filling which allows for an even filling and lofty sleeping surface. Further, the baffle box design helps to keep the fill in place so you don’t feel any lumps or bumps and reduce bunching.
The 1200gsm of fibre fill and high thread count cotton casing are highly breathable materials and promote airflow, ensuring the topper does not trap heat and remains temperature neutral – Hot sleepers rejoice!
As far as washing goes, the topper is fully machine washable and tumble dryer friendly, making it very easy to care for – No more lugging it to the dry cleaners or spot cleaning it with a damp cloth. However, note that you’d need a large machine (at least 8 kg) to accommodate the topper as it’s rather bulky.

Size Options And Price Chart
The Calming Blankets mattress topper is available in four different sizes: Single, Double, Queen, and King. As far as price goes, the topper is affordably priced compared to similar options. For example, the microCloud Mattress Topper (which we’ll be reviewing next), which is hugely popular and almost a like-for-like product, is priced nearly double the Calming Blankets mattress topper across all sizes and it does not even come with a sleep trial.
Here’s a breakdown of the size and price options:
|Single||36” x 74”||$159|
|Double||54” x 74”||$169|
|Queen||60” x 80”||$179|
|King||72” x 80”||$199|
The Calming mattress topper ships for free within the contiguous Australia and paid shipping is available to New Zealand. The return pick-up fee is also free if you’re not happy with it.
The topper arrives compressed and rolled in a box. Once you take it out of the box, it will quickly expand to its full size. However, we should mention that it does have a slight chemical smell upon first unboxing, but this will dissipate quickly.
Calming Blankets mattress topper comes with a 30-night sleep trial and a 12 months warranty. Generally, most brands don’t offer sleep trials for toppers, so this is a nice perk.
I think Calming Blankets has hit a home run with their mattress topper. Certainly, they got their market research right as this topper seems to have been designed with the Australian consumer in mind. As I said before, it’s like an alternative to the hugely popular microCloud Mattress Topper at almost half the price. If you’re looking for an affordable way to make your bed more comfortable, I recommend giving it a try. However, if you’re seeking more support or pressure relief, you may consider a memory foam topper or even replacing your mattress.
