Ecosa is one of the leading mattress-in-a-box brands in Australia. They followed up the success of their adjustable mattress with a line-up of bedding solutions, furniture and now, the topper.
Just like their mattress, the Ecosa topper is made from similar gel-infused memory foam. The proprietary G7 memory foam material is more reactive and sleeps cooler than the traditional memory foam while offering excellent body contouring support.
On the firmness scale, I feel the Ecosa topper lies between the medium and medium-soft range. It wasn’t super plush or luxurious like a hotel bed but it squishes and supports in the right places. Which means, it will cradle the pressure points and lend softness to your overall bedding.
That also means, the Ecosa topper may not be perfect for every type of sleeper. Keep reading.
Who might like the Ecosa topper:
Who might not like the Ecosa topper:
TL;DR: If your current mattress needs a boost of comfort and softness, the Ecosa topper should serve you well. It can soften your bed by 1 to 1.5 points. For instance, if your current mattress is 7 or 8 on the firmness scale, the Ecosa topper can put your bed into the 5.5 to 6.5 range.
Tip: If buyers of the Ecosa mattress find it firm across all the three options, you can request the team to send you the Ecosa topper for free during that 120-night trial.
For the review, I ordered a queen-sized topper. It was delivered to my home address (Sydney) in two days and it came half-folded in a medium-size box weighing around 7 kg.
The topper wasn’t vacuum-compressed like the Ecosa mattress, which means, there was minimal off-gassing while unpacking and that it expanded to its original size quickly.
For the purpose of the trial, I put it on the Temp-ur Micro-Tech 20 Firm mattress, which is 7.5/10 in terms of firmness. I felt the Ecosa topper made the overall bedding feel softer and more cuddly. I would rate my experience 6/10 on the firmness scale.
There are two points to remember. Your experience on this topper or any other may differ as it depends on the sleeper’s weight and the mattress it’s laid on. So if you place this topper over a firm mattress, you will get a medium-firm feel. Over an already-soft mattress, it would feel softer.
Similarly, a lightweight person may find the topper supportive whereas a bigger folk may sink into the topper and hit the firmer mattress under it.
The Ecosa topper is medium to medium-soft on the firmness scale and it’s 2 inches or 5 cm in thickness. In terms of feel, it has moderate memory foam characteristics, making it squishy but reactive. Which means, you don’t feel like you are ‘stuck in the mud’ or jammed up around the shoulder and hip regions while sleeping on your side. Like typical memory foam, it gently contours to the body shape and offers good pressure relief.
People who roll in the bed all night would do fine on the topper but also most other sleepers (back, side or stomach). However, heavier folks who tend to sleep on their stomach may find the topper a bit too soft, which may cause discomfort to their spine, and ultimately, their sleep.
Furthermore, the memory foam in this topper reduces the motion transfer considerably, which means, your sleep won’t be affected by your partner’s movements or restlessness in the bed.
The standout feature of the Ecosa topper is the four-corner straps that secure it to the bed. Mattress toppers that don’t have the securing mechanism tend to move sideways or skid off the bed after a few nights of use. What’s more? The bottom of the topper has plastic groves, which holds it on top of the mattress due to friction.
Also, the outer cover is removable and machine washable and these make it easier to care for.
An important bit. Despite being made up of memory foam, the Ecosa topper sleeps cooler. This can be attributed to the pincore design, breathable cover and gel-infused foam core that wick away the heat instead of trapping it. And so, hot or sweaty sleepers may like sleeping on this topper better than traditional foam toppers or mattresses.
Finally, is the Ecosa topper worth buying?
I certainly feel so. The Ecosa topper has a well-thought design and is made using high-quality material. It would add a new suppleness to your tired mattress. The 10-year warranty, which is the highest in the industry, is a testament to how confident Ecosa is sure about this offerings.
But as I have said before, if you’re looking for a luxuriously soft topper, then the Ecosa topper may not be for you. The Microcloud topper may work better, but it isn’t as durable as the Ecosa topper due to the microfiber filling.
My only gripe is that the Ecosa topper does not come with a sleep trial when other Ecosa products do. But to be fair to be to it, it’s an industry-wide practice.
