Best Pillows in Australia

James on our team is on his fourth pillow this year and still hunting. The truth about pillows is that your best pillow depends on whether you sleep on your side, back or stomach, and how broad your shoulders are. Here’s a sorted shortlist by category.

How to pick (Best pillow)

Side sleepers need a tall, firm pillow (11–14 cm) to keep the spine straight. Back sleepers need medium height (8–11 cm). Stomach sleepers need almost no pillow (3–6 cm). Combination sleepers do best with adjustable.

Best Overall — Ecosa Pillow

Ecosa’s shredded memory-foam pillow with three removable inserts adjusts to any sleep position. $145, 100-night trial. The single most versatile pillow on the Australian market.

Best Memory Foam — Tempur Original

Tempur’s solid visco-elastic memory foam is dense and supportive. Best for side sleepers and people with neck issues. Around $260. Long-lasting (5+ years).

Best Latex — Dunlopillo Therapeutic

Naturally cooling, responsive (no slow rebound), and lasts close to a decade. Around $180. The pillow Priya recommends to anyone who finds memory foam too sinky.

Best Down — MiniJumbuk Goose Down Surround

Australian-made, ethically sourced down with a feather core for support. Around $400. Cloud-like for back sleepers. Will last 7–10 years with proper care.

Best Wool — MiniJumbuk Sleep Naturally

Australian wool fill in a cotton cover. Naturally temperature-regulating — never gets hot in summer or cold in winter. Around $230. Best for sensitive skin.

Best Budget — Dunlopillo Microbead Comfort

Microfibre fill in a cotton cover, around $80. Will need replacing every 18 months but a third of the price of the premium options.

Best Cooling — Koala Memory Foam Pillow

Gel-infused memory foam, $125. The only memory foam we’ve tested that holds shape through Brisbane summers without bottoming out.

Best for Side Sleepers — Sleeping Duck Custom Pillow

Customisable height with a memory-foam core and microfibre top. $159. The combination of fill type means it doesn’t flatten by 3 am.

How long pillows last

Replace synthetic and microfibre every 18 months. Memory foam, latex and wool last 4–6 years. Down lasts longest (7–10 years) if regularly aired and washed in a proper cover.
