Innerspring vs Pocket Spring Mattress: What’s the Difference?
Innerspring pocket spring — Pocket springs move independently; traditional innersprings move as one. Our team explains the difference, the durability gap, and which suits which sleeper.
Priya on our team has slept on both for years. The differences are real, the marketing oversells them. Here’s the practical version.
The technical difference (Innerspring pocket spring)
- Traditional innerspring (Bonnell, continuous coil). All coils interconnected by helical wires. They move together — you feel one partner roll over.
- Pocket spring (individually encased coil). Each coil is wrapped in its own fabric pocket. Moves independently. Localised pressure response.
Comfort comparison
| Innerspring | Pocket spring | |
|---|---|---|
| Motion isolation | Poor | Excellent |
| Edge support | Good | Good (with reinforcement) |
| Bounce | High | Moderate |
| Pressure relief | Average | Good |
| Heat retention | Low (good airflow) | Low (good airflow) |
| Lifespan | 5–8 years | 8–12 years |
Which suits which sleeper
- Couples: pocket spring. The motion-isolation difference is significant.
- Single sleepers / hot sleepers: either works.
- Heavier sleepers (90 kg+): high-coil-count pocket spring (1,000+ coils in a queen) for support without dipping.
- Couples with very different weights: dual-firmness pocket spring (Sleeping Duck, King Living offer this).
Hybrid mattresses
Most modern Australian mattresses are hybrids — pocket springs in the support layer, foam or latex on top for pressure relief. The Eva Comfort, Sleeping Duck Mach II, Koala Plus, Origin Hybrid all fit this pattern.
Coil count, briefly
800–1,500 coils in a queen is standard. More coils = finer pressure mapping but diminishing returns. Beyond 1,800, you’re paying for marketing. The coil gauge (thickness) matters as much — heavier-gauge wire holds support longer.
What to ask before buying a spring mattress
- Coil count (queen)?
- Coil gauge?
- Edge reinforcement?
- Top layer thickness and material?
- Warranty length?
