About

This guide covers about for Australian readers — practical, current, and tested by our team.

Who runs What A Sleep (About)

What A Sleep is a small Australian editorial team that has been testing mattresses, bedding and sleep gadgets since 2018. We started because every “best mattress” list we read was a re-skin of the same press release. We wanted somewhere a tired Australian could land, get straight answers, and pick a bed that lasts a decade.

Our team

  • Hannah — lead reviewer. Hannah has slept on every mattress-in-a-box brand sold in Australia and a fair few that aren’t anymore. She runs our review rig out of a spare bedroom in Adelaide.
  • James — sleep-science writer. James reads the Sleep Health Foundation studies so you don’t have to, and translates them into plain English without the wellness-industrial fluff.
  • Priya — bedding tester. If it goes between you and a mattress, Priya has spilled coffee on it, washed it 30 times, and measured how it feels at 3am in February.

How we test

Every product we recommend is one we’ve slept on, sat under, or measured in person. We buy at retail where we can, accept review samples where we can’t, and disclose either way at the top of the review. We don’t take payment to change a verdict.

How we make money

We use affiliate links to brands like Koala, Ecosa and Sleeping Duck. If you click through and buy, the brand pays us a small commission and you pay nothing extra. That commission funds the next round of testing. It does not move a brand up our list.

What we cover

Mattresses, bed frames, sheets, pillows, blankets, sleep tech and the science of getting a decent night’s rest in an Australian climate. If you’d like us to test something we haven’t, drop us a line on the Contact page.

For independent guidance on sleep and wellbeing, the Sleep Health Foundation is a good starting point.
