1. Calm — Best Overall (Best healthy sleep)

Calm has the deepest sleep-story library, narrated by the likes of Matthew McConaughey and Stephen Fry. Plus guided meditation, breathwork, and ambient soundscapes. Around $90/year. Free trial worth using before subscribing.

2. Sleep Cycle — Best Tracker

Australian-friendly sleep tracking using your phone’s microphone (no wearable needed). Tracks sleep stages, snoring, and wake-time mood. Free tier covers basics; premium ($45/year) adds long-term trends and sleep aids. The most accurate phone-based tracker we’ve tested.

3. Insight Timer — Best Free

Genuinely free meditation and sleep-content app, with a paid optional course tier. The free library is bigger than most paid apps. Useful if you want to dip in without subscribing.

4. Smiling Mind — Best Australian

Made in Melbourne, free, with content tailored to Australian users (including First Nations content). Mostly mindfulness-based but with a strong sleep section. Free.

5. Sleepio — Best for Insomnia

An evidence-based digital CBT-I (cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia) program — the gold-standard non-drug treatment for chronic insomnia. The app walks through a 6-week program with measurable outcomes. Subscription around $400 — but covered by some Australian private health funds.

6. Headspace — Best for Beginners

Easier on-ramp than Calm if you’re new to meditation. Strong sleep tab with wind-down meditations and “sleepcasts” (long-form ambient stories). $135/year.
