What Is a Bolster Pillow? Uses, Sizes & Benefits
James on our team gets this question often enough that it deserves a proper answer. A bolster pillow is a long, cylindrical pillow — historically European in origin, used for everything from spinal support to lumbar relief to decoration on the foot of a made bed.
Standard sizes in Australia
| Size | Length × diameter | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 40–50 cm × 12 cm | Lumbar support, neck |
| Medium | 60–80 cm × 15 cm | Side-sleeper between knees, decorative |
| Long / king | 100–150 cm × 18–22 cm | Body pillow alternative, bed-end decoration |
The four useful jobs a bolster pillow does
- Knee separation for side sleepers. A bolster between the knees aligns hips and prevents lumbar twist. Often more effective than a body pillow because it stays where you put it.
- Lumbar support. A small bolster behind the lower back when reading in bed reduces fatigue.
- Pregnancy support. Long bolsters work as a body-pillow alternative — see also our pick of pregnancy pillows.
- Recovery / surgery. Post-knee or post-hip surgery, a bolster keeps the operated joint stable through the night.
Common fills
Bolsters are usually filled with cotton, polyester fibre, or buckwheat hulls. Buckwheat is firmer (best for therapeutic use); polyester is lighter (best for decoration); cotton sits in the middle. For nightly support use, a buckwheat or memory-foam bolster will hold shape longer than a fibre fill.
Care
Most bolsters have removable, washable covers. The fill itself can usually be aired in sun every couple of months. Wash buckwheat-fill covers separately — never put the buckwheat through a washing machine.
