What Is a Body Pillow? Benefits, Sizes & How to Use It
Hannah on our team has slept with a body pillow most nights for a decade — once you go body-pillow, you don’t go back. Here’s what you need to know if you’re thinking of getting one.
What it does (Body pillow)
A body pillow runs the length of your torso (or longer). Side sleepers hug it, looping a leg over to hold the hips at the right angle and keep the upper arm from collapsing forward. The result is straighter spinal alignment, less hip and shoulder pressure, and far fewer middle-of-the-night repositions.
The three main shapes
- Straight. A simple long rectangle, 130–150 cm. Easiest to find; works for most adults.
- U-shape. Wraps around the head and runs down both sides. Popular in pregnancy because it supports back and front simultaneously.
- C-shape / J-shape. Curves around one side. Combines head-pillow and body-pillow in one piece.
Sizes
| Size | Length | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 130 cm | Adults under 170 cm |
| Long | 150 cm | Adults 170–185 cm |
| Extra long | 180+ cm | Tall adults, full-length hug |
Fills
- Microfibre / down alternative. Soft, light, machine washable. The most common.
- Memory-foam shred. Firmer, contours to body. Holds shape longest.
- Buckwheat. Heavy and very firm — niche use.
- Latex. Cool, responsive, expensive. Worth it for hot side sleepers.
Who benefits most
Side sleepers (everyone). Pregnant sleepers (huge — supports the bump and the back simultaneously). People with hip or shoulder pain. People who toss because they can’t find a comfortable arm position. The non-fans tend to be back sleepers, hot sleepers (a body pillow traps heat against the side of you), and very small bed shares (a body pillow takes a lot of mattress real estate).
Australian options
The Bambi 100% Australian Wool Body Pillow is the premium pick — about $230, lasts a decade. The MyHouse Microfibre is $80 and fine for most people. For pregnancy, the Pharmedoc U-Shape (around $160) is the most-recommended in our reader survey. See also our Pharmedoc pregnancy pillow review.
For independent guidance on sleep and wellbeing, the Sleep Health Foundation is a good starting point.
