Australia’s Best Quilts and Doonas
Australias best quilt — Wool, down, alpaca, microfibre — the quilt you sleep under matters more in winter than the mattress under you. Our team’s pick of the best quilts in Australia.
Hannah on our team has slept under more quilts than is reasonable, in everything from a Cairns summer to a Hobart winter. Here’s the round-up that survived three rounds of testing.
How quilt warmth is measured (Australias best quilt)
Australian quilts use a “tog” rating — higher tog = warmer. A 10–13 tog quilt is summer-only; 13–17 tog is shoulder-season; 17+ tog is full winter. Wool quilts are generally lower tog because the fibre is so insulating, while synthetic fills need more material to hit the same warmth.
1. MiniJumbuk Wool — Best Overall
MiniJumbuk has been making Australian wool quilts since the 1970s. Their core range goes 250 g/m² (summer) to 700 g/m² (winter), all 100% Australian wool in a 100% cotton casing. Naturally moisture-wicking, no overheating. Queen winter quilt around $400. The most universally comfortable quilt we’ve tested.
2. Downia Hungarian Goose Down — Best Down
Downia uses Hungarian goose down in a cotton chambray cover, with a 700+ fill power for premium loft. Light, warm, breathable. Queen winter quilt around $1,200. Will last 15+ years if cared for properly.
3. Sheridan Aiken Alpaca — Best Alpaca
Sheridan’s alpaca quilt is hypoallergenic (alpaca contains no lanolin), naturally temperature-regulating, and surprisingly light. Around $700 for a queen.
4. Linen House Vienna Microfibre — Best Budget
Linen House’s microfibre quilts are genuinely good value at $120–$180 for a queen. Won’t last a decade like wool, but light, washable, and warm enough for shoulder season.
5. Logan & Mason Bamboo — Best Year-Round
Bamboo and microfibre blend, light enough for summer, warm enough for autumn. Queen around $200. Machine washable.
Pick by season
| Season | Tog / GSM | Best fill |
