What “good linen” means (Best linen sheets)
- Flax origin. French (Normandy and Brittany) and Belgian flax are the gold standard.
- Weight (GSM). 160–200 GSM is light/year-round. 200–250 is heavier and best for cool climates.
- Stonewashed or pre-softened. Linen out of the loom is stiff. Pre-softening gives day-one comfort.
- Single ply. Avoid blends below 80% linen — they pill and lose the breathability.

How long it lasts
A good linen set will last 7–12 years. Wash temperature matters — warm/cool only, never hot. Avoid the dryer’s high-heat setting; line dry where you can.
The first three weeks
Even pre-softened linen feels slightly textured for the first 5–10 washes. After that it relaxes into the soft drape it’s known for. Don’t panic at week one.
