Benefits of Platform Beds:

Platform beds have many benefits, including:
  • Platform beds do not require a spring box. You can save money and valuable bedroom space by doing this. Ever tried to carry a boxspring around? Platform beds are a great alternative to box springs!
  • Compatible for all types of mattresses Platform beds offer a flat surface that supports all types of mattresses including latex, memory foam and coil. As opposed to box springs which are generally best suited for innerspring and hybrid mattresses.
  • Versatile & Stylish: There are many different styles of platform beds, from rustic to modern. You’re sure to find a platform that suits your style.
  • Squeak-Free Support The platform bed frame is designed in a simple way that makes it strong, stable and resistant to squeaks. The solid surface distributes the weight evenly and eliminates weak points that could cause your bed frame to make noises when you move.
  • Affordable: Platform bed frames are usually more affordable than others. This is an excellent option if you are on a tight budget. There is no need for a bed skirt since there isn’t a box spring. This saves you money.
  • Low-Profile As we have mentioned, the platform bed sits close to the floor. Platform beds are easy for younger people to climb into or out of. Platform beds are also ideal for rooms with low ceilings or small bedrooms.
  • Platform Beds are easy to assemble and transport. The assembly process is quick and easy and doesn’t require special tools. These are great for those who frequently move and need to take their bed frame with them.

Disadvantages of a Platform Bed:

Platform beds have many benefits, but there are also some disadvantages.
    • Too low for some: The platform bed’s lower height may be good or bad, depending on personal preferences. Platform beds may be too low for some people. It can be difficult to get into and out of bed for people with mobility problems or those who are older.
    • Sturdy, but not as sturdy as foundation beds. If you want a bed that is rock solid, you may consider a bed base for foundations.
    • Wood Platform Beds need regular maintenance: Wood Platform Beds expand and contract as humidity and temperature change. To prevent the bed from creaking, you may need to apply beeswax periodically or tighten bolts. The wood will also need to be polished at least every two years to keep its finish.
    • Risks of shin injuries: Platform beds are close to the floor, so there’s a greater chance of you hitting your shins as you walk near and enter the bed. This is particularly true for platform beds with sharp edges.
    • Platform Beds do not offer under-bed storage: Platform bed frames don’t have the same options for storage as other types. You might consider an ottoman bed if you want more storage space.
    • Your mattress may slide. If your mattress is too slick, it could slide on the platform frame. Use a mattress that has grippy fabric under it or place a non-slip pad on the platform bed frame to help prevent sliding and slipping.
    • Platform beds do not allow bed skirts. If you prefer the look of bed skirts or dust ruffles, then you will be unable to use them. Platform beds are close to the floor, so bed skirts will just hang down.

Types of Platform Beds:

Platform beds come in three main types: solid, slatted or metal mesh.
  • Solid Platform Beds: As the name suggests, the bed’s surface is solid wood or metal. This is the most popular platform bed because it’s simple and sturdy.
  • Slatted Platform beds: A slatted bed is a platform with slats of wood that are parallel. This type of bed is more breathable and is an excellent option for people who tend to sleep hot. Slatted beds soften the mattress’ feel due to their flexibility.
  • Metal Mesh Platforms: A metal-grid or metal-mesh platform bed is characterized by a mesh or grid surface. These platform beds offer a more affordable alternative to solid or slatted beds, while still being very durable and sturdy. They tend to look minimal and industrial, which is not for everyone.

Considerations to make when choosing a platform bed:

When choosing a platform mattress, there are several things to keep in mind.
  • Slats length: If you have a slatted bed, check that the slats can be adjusted. The mattress can sag if the slats extend beyond 3 inches. The slats shouldn’t be further apart than 2 or 3 inches.
  • Height: Platform bed heights are available in different sizes. Some platform beds are low-profile, others are standard height and still others are higher. Platform beds range in height from 18 to 36 inches. Low profile beds are not recommended for older people (less than 20 inch ).).
  • Storage: Some platform bed models come with built-in storage, like drawers along the side of the bed. Others have shelves in the headboard. Platform beds with minimalistic designs don’t have any storage. Platform beds with storage are usually more expensive.
  • Style: Platform beds are available in many styles including transitional, traditional, and modern. Select the style that best fits your taste and needs.
  • Platform beds can be made from a variety of materials including wood, leather, metal and upholstery. Metal platform beds offer a more durable and affordable alternative to wood, while upholstered beds give off a luxurious look, but are also expensive.
  • Budget: Prices for platform beds range from $250 up to $2000. Choose a bed based on how much money you are willing to spend. You can find a mid-range, good-quality bed for between $600 and $1000.
