Comforter Sizes and Dimensions Chart
Comforter Sizes and Dimensions Chart
You may be overwhelmed when browsing the bedding section to find a new comforter by the wide selection of brands and styles. You may assume that you should buy a comforter of a standard size to match your mattress. If you have a king-sized bed, for example, you might want to purchase a king-size comforter. However, we recommend that you do some research before you make your final decision.
You ask: Why? The “standard size” of comforters is not standard. You may think that your comforter and mattress are the right size, but they could be too small or too large for your bed.
How do you determine the size of your mattress?
Mattress sizes are not the same as comforter sizes.
The dimensions of mattresses are standard, but not for comforters. In addition to the dimensions of your mattress, other factors such as mattress depth and expected overhang are also important. There are no standardized comforter sizes, and the brands vary in size.
Comforter sizes chart
In order to determine the most common dimensions of comforters, we analyzed 30 comforters from Walmart, Amazon Wayfair Macys and Bed Bath and Beyond. Here’s a chart based on our research that shows the most common mattress sizes and the recommended comforter dimensions.
Twin Size Comforter
A twin-size bed comforter will fit both a twin and twin XL-sized bed. A twin-sized mattress measures 38″ by 75″. Therefore, a comforter that is between 64″, 88″, and 68″, 92″, will work well.
Due to their smaller size, twin-size comforters are the most comfortable choice for children and single sleepers.
Twin XL Size Comforter
A twin XL Comforter can be purchased if you already own a twin or twin XL mattress. The twin XL dimensions are 38″ x80″, so you can choose a comforter size between 64″ x90″ and 68″x92″ .
You will get a comforter just right if you go for the lower end. If you go with the higher end, the bedding will be more spacious and will hang lower.
Full/Double Size Comforter
You should make sure that your bed is a twin or twin XL. A double/full-size mattress measures 54″ by 75″, and comforter sizes can range between “82′ x86″ to “84′ x88”.
The range also has an upper and lower end. Before choosing the dimensions, you should think about how much overhang you need and if you sleep alone or with a partner.
Queen Size Comforter
The dimensions of a queen-size bed are 60″ by 80″ and the dimensions of a comforter range from 88″ by 90″ to 90′ x 94″. You can use a queen-size comforter for a full/double or queen-size bed. A full/double bed with a Queen comforter is preferred by most because of the overhang and optimal comfort for sleeping with a companion.
You can buy an oversized comforter if you want even more overhang for your queen-sized bed. The dimensions of oversized bedding for queens are usually 90″ x94″ or 92″x98″.
King Size Comforter
The width of a king-size mattress is the same as that of a queen-sized mattress. The dimensions of the mattress are 76″ by 80″ and those of the comforter range from 102″ x86″ up to 106″ x90″. A king-sized comforter can be used for full/double, queen and king-size mattresses.
You can also purchase an oversized comforter to fit your king-size bed. This will allow you more room on the sides. An oversized king-size comforter is 106″ x96″ to 112 ” x98″. California king comforters are also available. They have dimensions between 104″ x92″ and 106″x96″, which is slightly smaller than oversized king.
What size comforter do you need?
To determine what size comforter to buy for your bed, you must first measure the mattress and decide how much overhang is desired. Only by taking measurements can you determine what size comforter is best for your aesthetic and needs. It’s important to make sure that your comforter is large enough to cover both you and any potential partners AND doesn’t have an unwelcome overhang.
Use the following steps to estimate comforter dimensions based on size, style and comfort.
Measure the dimensions of the mattress: Use a measuring tape to measure the length and width of the mattress, from edge to edge. You can skip this step if you know the dimensions of your mattress.
Measure the side overhang. This will help you determine how much overhang you want on your mattress. The length of the overhang is completely up to you. A 15″ overhang is a good rule of thumb. Keep in mind that the overhang will reduce when you sleep underneath the comforter. It is perfectly fine to have an overhang longer than 15″.
Start by measuring the distance from the edge of the mattress closest to the ground to where you want your comforter to hang.
Step 4: Add the two numbers after measuring the overhang on your bed and the mattress width. This number will be labelled “Variable Width A”.
Step 5: As in step 2, you need to measure how much overhang you desire, but you’ll be doing it at the foot of the bed this time.
Step 5 Add the two numbers after measuring the length and overhang of the mattress at the foot. This number will be called “Variable length (B)”.
Step 6 The final step is to select the dimensions of your comforter and mattress using variables A and B. The equation will be “Variable A” x “Variable B.”
How to choose the right size comforter:
Upsizing your bedding can be a good idea. An oversized comforter will give the bed an overall fuller appearance. A longer overhang may also add to the aesthetics of the room. If you or your partner move a lot while in bed, it’s best to choose a larger size to prevent “comforter theft” at night.
2) Divide & Rule: I assure you, the secret to a happy married life is a separate blanket. In Scandinavia, it’s common to have different comforters. On a king- or queen-size bed, you can use two twin comforters or twin XL. You and your partner will each have their own comforter, which you can personalize to your liking.
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
Q. How do I choose the size of a comforter?
A: Look for a comforter at least 15″ longer and 30″ wider than your mattress. It’s up to you to decide how much you want to overhang on the side.
Q. How should the comforter be placed on the bed?
The comforter should not fit snugly on the bed. It would help if you aimed to have a 15″ overhang at least on each visible side. The comforter should extend beyond the mattress to partially cover the bed skirt or frame.
Q. Should the comforter you use be the same size as that of your bed?
Not necessarily. You can go up a size if you want more room or a longer overhang. By default, comforters are slightly larger than the corresponding mattress size to allow for the overhang. It’s ultimately a matter of personal taste.
Q. What size comforter is best for a queen-sized bed?
A queen-size comforter will work well if you are sleeping alone. If you sleep with a partner that moves around during the night, you may want to consider a king-size comforter.
Q. Are queen and full-size comforters the Same?
A full-size comforter has a 5″ shorter width and a 6″ shorter length than a queen-sized comforter. If you have a bed that is full-sized, you can choose between a queen or full-sized comforter. However, if your bed is queen-sized, the full-size comforter would be too small.
Take Away
You should always remember that you can only find the perfect comforter size by taking accurate measurements of the bare mattress. Also, you need to consider the amount of overhang and the tightness you desire. Use the steps above to ensure your comforter fits exactly how you want.
