Spinaleze Pillow Review

The Australian Spinaleze Pillow is certainly doing marketing well. The real question is: Is the Spinaleze pillow worth the hype, and the $220 cost tag? Does it relieve back pain? Does it suit all types of sleepers as claimed by the brand?

As a sleep coach and lead reviewer, I tested the Spinaleze Pillow for several nights. What did I discover? My experience has been a mixed one.

Below you can find my complete review of the Spinaleze Pillow. You can also skip to the ‘Review summary section if you are in a hurry.

Review Summary

Spinaleze offers four different pillows. The pillows are similar in construction and firmness but vary in height. Its ability to select the pillow of desired height makes it an attractive product for everyone. This allows the pillow to fill in the space between your head, shoulders and neck for a healthy alignment of the spine and neck. The contouring memory foam offers pressure relief and is supportive.

Price may have a part in its goodness. You can also find a good contour foam pillow for less than half the price. You may want to consider other options. Yes, it is made in Australia, and has the certifications you need, but it comes with the $220 price tag. the fixed height.

The Ecosa contour pillow I believe is a great substitute. You can adjust the height of this pillow, try it out for 120 nights and return it at a lower price.

Pros

Here are some things I liked best about the Spinaleze Pillow:

  • Medically-backed and well-designed
  • All types of side or back sleepers can be accommodated
  • Multiple height options to align neck and spine precisely
  • The product is designed and manufactured in Australia

Cons

Consider these shortcomings before choosing a pillow.

  • Spinaleze pillows cost $220. Not cheap. It’s not worth the price.
  • No sleep test Worse still, the pillow must be opened and sealed before it can be returned.
  • It may not be suitable for stomach or freestyle sleeping.
  • Height fixed. You can’t change the height of your pillow for any reason. The height of the pillow could have been adjusted like Ecosa.

Spinaleze pillows made in Australia are a good choice if you’re looking to support local economies and sustainable practices. The eco spa contour pillows are more worth the money.

My Experience

I’m 5’10” (178cm). I sleep mostly on my side, but I also roll onto my back. The Spinaleze team suggested that, based on my sleep preferences and height, I choose a medium-profile cushion.

The delivery was slow – the pillow arrived at my Sydney home in four days. The pillow was vacuum-sealed, and it took a while for the shape to return. The good news is that I did not smell any foul odour or off-gassing when I opened the seal.

The pillow is wrapped in a thin, 100% cotton casing. It may look simple but it has been designed with great care. The foam core is enclosed by a surface that promotes airflow on both the top and bottom. Spinaleze may look like a contour pillow, but it’s unique because of the cutout that is placed right where your neck rests. The cutout keeps the head stable in the dip and provides continuous neck support.

The pillow was medium soft (6/10), but I would have preferred it to be firmer. The pillow was quite soft, but I felt well-supported. Memory foam is like quicksand, and it doesn’t react quickly to your movements. You could feel ‘ stuck’. This pillow is ideal for those who sleep in the same position throughout the night. Also, I think stomach sleepers will find this pillow too tall even if it is a low-profile pillow.

The Spinaleze pillow has a unique shape that I believe helps promote neutral spine alignment. It also supports your head in the right places.

Construction

The pillow comes in four different profiles: LowMediumHigh or Children. However, the construction, materials and firmness are the same.

The Spinaleze Pillow, made from visco-elastic foam aerated (memory foam for the rest of us), is designed to provide plush comfort without compromising on comfort. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration has also approved it for use as therapeutic equipment.

The patented foam in the pillow is designed to mould itself to your head, neck, and shoulders. The memory foam in this pillow is slightly softer than the memory foam used by the Koala and Ecsa pillows.

Memory foam blocks are designed to align the spine with the body and prevent inadvertently twisting during the night. This is one of the leading causes of back pain, neck pain, and other spine-related problems. The pillow top is also angled upwards. This design is meant to support the head without lifting your neck and shoulders.

It also has ridges that run along the surface of the pillow to promote airflow. This helps to prevent the accumulation of heat which is a common complaint about memory foam products.

In terms of durability, the company recommends that the pillow be replaced every 18 months. This is standard in the world of memory foam pillows. Over time, the foam softens and loses its properties.

Sleep Position Ratings

The Spinaleze Pillow’s experience will differ dramatically depending on the loft you choose.

  • The low-profile pillow is for back sleepers who do not need much elevation to keep their neck and head straight.
  • The medium profile pillow works best for side sleepers who are shorter than 6 feet or have narrow shoulders and need a little more loft to keep their head aligned with their spine.
  • The high-profile pillow can also be used by side sleepers who are taller, have wider shoulders or need more loft to keep the head and neck in a straight position.
  • The pillow for children is a self-explanatory design that’s designed to accommodate kids who prefer to sleep on their side or back.

Stomach sleeping can be harmful, especially for people who have back pain. If you are a stomach sleeper like 32% of Australians, then choose a low-profile pillow.

Dimensions

The pillow is the same size in both length and width. The only difference is the height of the pillow at both front and back.

Low-Profile 55cm by 36cm, x height: 10cm in front – 11.5cm at the rear
Medium Profile 55cm by 36cm, x height: 12.5cm in front – 14cm at the rear
High-Profile 55cm by 36cm, x 15cm in height (front) and 16.5cm at the rear

The Spinaleze pillow fits the standard pillowcase in Australia (48 x 72 cm).

Is the Spinaleze Pillow worth buying?

Spinaleze is not a revolutionary product. It may be just me, I can’t get the hype around this product. If you want to know what I recommend, this is my answer:

If you are looking for a pillow made in Australia that is both supportive and comfortable, and if price is not a factor for you, then Spinaleze is the best choice.

If you’re trying memory foam or contour pillows for the first time, it may be better to begin with cheaper options that come with a free sleep trial. (For example, the ecosa pillow). Spinaleze is a good alternative if these pillows don’t work. The premise behind contour pillows is the same – to align the spine while providing support.
