Koala Sofa Bed Review (2021) — Worth buying?
For far too long, sofa beds have neither been good sofas nor good beds. Just cheap and uncomfortable gimmicks, actually. But the sofa bed by homegrown furniture brand Koala seems to be walking the tightrope quite well. Here’s why.
Featuring an ingenious design, the Koala sofa can be assembled in 15 minutes and it transforms from sofa to bed and back in just seconds. Plus, it offers a 120-night trial and 4-hour delivery option. However, all the features and unique selling points don’t matter if the sofa bed isn’t comfortable both as a sofa and a bed and, most importantly, durable.
So I put the Koala sofa bed to test for two full weeks. And I am finding it difficult to find any glaring faults with it though shortcomings are there. Find its pros and cons in the review below.

Ordering & assembly experience
The Koala sofa bed was delivered to my Sydney address on the same day ordering — precisely 6 hours after I hit the ‘buy now’ button. It came in five boxes, which weren’t too bulky to carry up the stairs. The three-fold cushion comes vacuum-compressed just like a mattress-in-box but it was the heaviest of the boxes, weighing about 15 kg.
Coming to the assembly, I think the only challenge was to unpack all the boxes and to figure what to do with so many cardboard boxes. From thereon, the assembly was a quick process of 15 minutes and fun too. Like a puzzle, your aim is to piece together the components using 12 screws and a large connector till they are sturdy and steady. No additional tool is required.
You can find the setup instructions illustrated on a large cardboard.
My two-week review of the Koala sofa bed:
Disclosure: The team of WhatASleep bought a queen sofa bed from Koala for the review. Koala hasn’t sponsored this review in any way.
I slept on the Kola sofa bed for straight two weeks and also used it as a couch for reading and binge-watching occasionally. I like how easily it transforms from a sofa to bed and a bed to sofa — Hats off to the clever design.
Now let me tell you what I feel about the product both as a bed and a sofa:
As a bed:
I’ve slept on sofa beds before, and let me tell you, my mornings weren’t always pleasant. And so, I was a bit apprehensive to trial the Koala sofa bed. However, after using the sofa bed as my primary bed for two full weeks, I’m happy to share that I didn’t miss my original bed at all. It’s very comfortable to sleep on, night after night.
The bed is medium-firm (6.5) and quite supportive. It feels firmer and more responsive than the Koala mattress even though both are constructed with similar polyurethane material.
That said, firmness is a matter of personal preference and can be very subjective. Some may find the bed too firm or too soft, that is. The good thing is if you don’t like the bed’s firmness, you can either return the sofa bed or you can request Koala to send you a memory foam topper (firm or soft) free of cost. However, storing the topper may be a hassle if you don’t have ample space in the room.
I have mixed feelings about the mattress fabric. It has tiny plastic groves on the surface, which I could feel while sleeping. However, it did help to throw a thick sheet or fleece over it.
As a sofa:
I found the sofa mode decent but I surely missed having a footrest. I feel a footrest will allow one to sit in a more relaxed and laid back manner while watching movies or reading a book.
The reason I felt uneasy is because the sofa is a bit stiff and one doesn’t sink in too much. It isn’t too deep either, which means, you can’t rest your head against it but only your back. I feel ordering a footrest can take care of these shortcomings quite well.
However, the square armrests are quite wide to keep your phone, books, remote, and controller on, something which all couch lovers want.
In terms of appearance, it is like any other sofa. I feel the brand should have worked a little more on the finishing touch because the yellow baseboard is visible from certain angles and that looks odd.
All in all, it’s a decent sofa to offer to your friends and guests but if you intend to use the sofa for long hours every day, consider investing in a footrest as well.
Convinced? Get Koala Sofa Bed
Of the hundreds of reviews we studied, 90% of the users seemed to be content with the purchase. The Koala sofa bed was great to sleep on, they agreed on.
However, we came across conflicting reviews too. While one section of users felt the sofa was soft and sinking, especially around the edges, another set thought it was firm. Again, how you feel on the sofa depends on your perception of firmness, preferences, and body weight. And this is where the 120-night trial comes in handy — If you don’t like it, you can send back the product for a full refund.
Finally, is Koala sofa bed worth buying?
Yes, I think so. One, the Koala sofa bed offers excellent balance, functionality, practicality and comfort. Two, there are not too many good sofa bed options in the Australian market in this price range.
Stiff and full of tiny grooves, it does have few niggles, yes, but these can be overlooked given it’s a two-in-one product. Further, the quick delivery, ease-of-setup, 120-night sleep trial, excellent after-sales support and a 5-year warranty make the Koala sofa bed worth its hype.
