You can then mark it on your calendar to help you remember (tip: Google calendar is quite handy). You could also select a memorable date, such as the first or last day of the month.

How to Rotate a Mattress Step by Step

You might think that rotating your mattress every three months is an additional chore that you could do without. However, if you do it at the same time as changing your bedsheets, it will feel like a simple task.

To rotate your mattress, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the quiltpillows and bedsheets. Although it is possible to leave these on, it will be a lot easier if they’ve been taken off.
  2. Clear the space around your bed. If possible, slide bedside cabinets out of the way and place any nearby lamps or ornaments on the floor.
  3. Stand at the foot of the bed and, if possible, get someone else to stand at the head. This process will still work with one person, but it’s easier with two.
  4. Take a firm hold of the edge of the mattress or the handles if it has them. Then slightly lift it and rotate it 90 degrees until the mattress is resting perpendicular to the box spring or the bed base. Rest it there and adjust your position so you can move to the other end of the bed.
  5. Now, lift and slide the mattress in another 90 degrees rotation until the end of the mattress that was at the foot of the bed is now at the head of the bed.
  6. Now perform any final adjustments that may be necessary to ensure that the mattress and bed base are correctly aligned.
  7. Put the sheets, pillows and quilt back on the bed.

Should You Flip Your Mattress?

Most modern mattresses are made in a way that makes them unsuitable for flipping. They’re constructed in layers that direct the best support in one direction.

Check the care instructions that came with your mattress to see if yours should be flipped. If you can flip your mattress, it’s worth doing and comes with a range of benefits.

Unless otherwise stated in the care instructions, we recommend that you flip your mattress at least once every six months. When you flip it, you should rotate it at the same time. Or you can alternate flipping and rotating every three months. 

What Type of Mattresses Should Not Be Flipped?

Most newer mattresses or mattresses that’s been designed to have only one side for sleeping should not be flipped. This is because the sleeping side has been specially designed to spread your weight evenly as you sleep and provide a comfortable yet firm surface. 

Mattresses that should not be flipped include:

  • Memory foam mattresses – These are usually one side only and should not be flipped.
  • Latex mattresses – These also have one sleeping side only and should not be flipped.
  • Hybrid mattresses – This has an inner-spring system with a layer of foam on one side.
  • Pillow top mattress These are mattresses with an extra layer of padding stitched to one side.


Regularly rotating or flipping your mattress will significantly extend its life and prevent it from getting lumpy or sagging.
