OneBed Mattress Comparison: Quick Summary of the Ratings

Price starting from: $799
Price starting from: $1299
Verdict: While the OneBed Essential mattress comes in as the most affordable of the bunch, it’s also the most basic and struggles to compete against its elder siblings. When it comes to the other two options, the Original and the X, they’re too fundamentally different to make side-by-side comparisons possible. Your personal needs will determine whether you need the customizability of the Original or the all-encompassing hybrid support of the X.

About the Brand
Founded in 2015, Australian company Onebed has approached the online-only mattress-in-a-box at a different angle to many of its rivals, earning itself a productreview.com.au award for the best mattress in Australia in 2018 and 2019 in the process (alongside the legendary Koala).
What is that “different angle”, you ask? Well, rather than offering one mattress to suit all needs, or offering several mattresses that build upon each others’ strengths, Onebed has chosen to offer three astoundingly unique mattresses with completely different features and selling points. Their differences might make choosing between the three a tall order (which is why we’re here to guide you), but you can rest easy knowing that Onebed still offers dedicated post-purchase support which rivals—and in some ways outmatches—their myriad competitors.
OneBed Essential Review
It’s in the name; this is a simple, no-frills mattress that does its job with none of the bells and whistles that other products rely on. Call it “basic” or call it “pure”, either way, it is what it is. It’s formed of two foam layers: a 3-inch cooling gel-infused memory foam on top and a 5-inch high-density support foam on bottom. Expecting more? You won’t get it with this one we’re afraid.
OneBed Original Review
With three interchangeable foam layers and a removable cover, there’s a little more meat on the bones with this Original mattress. By default, the top layer is a 1.5-inch Dunlop latex foam, the middle layer is a 1.5-inch high-density visco-elastic memory foam and the bottom layer is a 7-inch high-density polyurethane support foam. Oh, and it’s all covered by a removable, dimpled cover made from plush polyester.
That’s more like it! Are you looking for more, though? Something which goes beyond the boundaries of foam? You’ll want to check out what’s coming up next.
OneBed X Review
We don’t know what the letter stands for, but we do know that it represents the most feature-packed mattress Onebed has to offer: four distinct foam layers and a sea of pocket springs, all covered in a cover of the high-quality materials.
On top is a buoyant, breathable layer of Davina foam; underneath you’ll find a layer of cooling gel-infused, pressure-relieving memory foam; next is a moisture-wicking, odour-removing layer of charcoal memory foam; afterwards is our ever-reliable layer of 5-zone pocket springs sitting atop a high-density durable base foam. Finally, covering it all is a highly breathable viscose blended fabric.
It’s luxurious, comfortable, feature-rich and made of top-quality materials. Whatever “X” stands for, we want more of it in our lives.
Comfort, Firmness & Feel
At a medium-firm 6/10 on the mattress firmness scale, the Essential mattress should suit a wide range of sleepers, although its simplicity and the lack of weight distribution features might make it a less-than preferable choice for heavier sleepers. Still, while it’s not packed with layers, the layers that are present—the comfort and support layers—do a good job of cradling the body, keeping the spine in alignment and preventing you from sinking too deep.
Thanks to its customisabiltiy, it’s not possible to nail the Original mattress to a single feel. Depending on which of its three foam layers you place on top, you’ll be in for a wildly different sleeping experience. With the memory foam layer on top, you’ll be in for a medium 5/10 on the mattress firmness scale; putting the Dunlop latex on top will provide you with a medium-firm 6.5/10; finally, placing the thicker polyurethane support layer on top will give you a firm 7.5/10 feel. Furthermore, these layers also determine a range of the mattress’ other characteristics: temperature regulation, pain/pressure relief as well as overall reactivity to name but a few.
Now we come to the X. While it sits at a middle-of-the-road ‘medium’ firmness (6/10 on the mattress firmness scale), there’s more going on with this mattress than meets the eye. Due to its layer-rich design, the X has some very firm layers indeed, only, they’re buried at the bottom of the 12-inch mattress. This means that the mattress is able to incredibly efficiently support your body and keep your spine and joints aligned during the night (far better than most ‘medium’ mattresses) while staying soft, bouncy and comfortable thanks to its top comfort layers. Additionally, the pocket spring layer further aids bodily alignment and supports weight distribution. Anyone suffering from chronic back or joint pain will want to listen up here too: while the other two options do offer pressure-relieving and body-contouring features, the X is the best of the lot for pain relief thanks to its 5-zone pocket spring layer, pair of memory foam layers and the firm foam base sitting at the bottom of them all.
As we’re always quick to point out, the mattress firmness scale, while a useful reference point for a mattress’ general feel, is not an objective indicator. To know how you’ll feel about any given mattress, you’ll need to try it out for yourself, which is why Onebed offers a generous 125-day risk-free trial across Australia!
Sleep Position Ratings
As mentioned, the Essential mattress should suit most sleepers, particularly back and side sleepers. Heavier customers or those who drift off on their fronts might prefer something with a little more generous in the way of support and weight distribution features,
As for the Original mattress, it’s a perfect choice for any sleeper, whether they choose to lay on their front, back or side. Even heavier folks will find themselves dozing off in peace with the firm support on offer here. It’s so customisable, it’s hard to imagine anyone struggling to find some configuration which works for them.
With its gradually softening series of layers which provide a softer feel while maintaining the benefits of firm sleep surfaces, the X is truly a mattress for all sleepers: front, side, back, heavy or light.
Being able to keep you cool is a requirement for any Aussie-made bed. When the dead-hot Australian summer kicks in, solid temperature regulating features may be the only thing standing between you and a series of sleepless nights. As mattresses with dominant memory foam layers (a material infamous for retaining heat), there was always the possibility that Onebed’s suite of products would fall flat on their face. Thankfully, this isn’t the case, and they all bring something to the table in terms of temperature neutrality.
The Essential’s top layer is infused with cooling gel, a process which perfectly mitigates the heat-retaining effects of memory foam while maintaining its body-cradling features.
The Original mattress takes a different approach. Instead of cooling gel, it offers a naturally cooling latex layer which, if placed on top (remember the interchangeable layers), provides a refreshingly cool night’s sleep.
Finally, the X reintroduces the cooling gel-infused memory foam, but it hardly stops there! It also tops that memory foam with a layer of Davina foam, which is naturally breathable. Plus, remember that charcoal memory foam we mentioned earlier? That boasts moisture-wicking, temperature regulating and odour removing capabilities—talk about going above and beyond. Wait… there’s more? Yep! Due to the natural spacing between the pocket springs, the X also promotes strong airflow, helping support the other layers’ cooling efforts. When it comes to cooling, the other mattresses may bring their best, but the X outshines them all!
Edge support is often overlooked, but it can be a much-appreciated feature for those who struggle to get out of bed, or even those who just enjoy sitting on the edge of their mattress. The Essential and Original mattresses hold their own in the edge support department and will suit any sleeper without specific edge support needs, but they’re hardly top-performers in the category, mostly due to their all-foam design.
The X, on the other hand, provides a better edge support offering thanks to its high-density base foam which tries to emulate the feel of steel gauge coils (although it still doesn’t quite live up to those high standards).
For superlative edge support, you’ll want to find a pocket spring mattress with steel gauge coils around the perimeter. Out of these three, though, the X is your best bet.
Got a fidgety partner who tosses and turns endlessly throughout the night? Perhaps you’re the restless one who leaves your partner sleepless and frustrated? Either way, you’ll need a mattress with outstanding motion isolation features to get the restful night you both deserve. The Australian heat is bad enough; you don’t need an endlessly shifting mattress to keep you up into the early hours.
The Essential mattress is unfortunately weak in the motion isolation game, with only the inherent motion isolation tendencies that come from memory foam. These aren’t insignificant, granted, but they don’t compare to specifically-designed motion isolation design.
That’s where we come to the Original mattress, which boasts “zero motion transfer” technology, otherwise known as the combined efforts of the latex and memory foam. Together, these layers pass the famed “Wine Glass Test” and will assuredly leave both you and your partner sleeping soundly night after night (according to Onebed).
Finally, the X also claims to pass the Wine Glass Test “with ease”, thanks to its Davina foam top layer and the subtle weight distribution features of its pocket spring layer. For motion isolation, you’ll be equally happy with the Original and the X; sadly, the Essential just hasn’t got the what it takes to prevent motion transfer.
Packaging and Delivery
Onebed is a mattress-in-a-box brand, which means that your mattress will come…. well, in a box! When it arrives at your door, you simply need to unbox it, cut the plastic wrapping and let it unfurl by itself. It can be used immediately, but may take up to 5 days to fully decompress.
The company offers “fast and free” Australia-wide shipping and free returns too.

We value genuine buyers’ opinions, which is why we always assess genuine Australian buyer feedback as part of our review process. Thankfully, the buyer consensus on all three Onebed products is almost entirely positive! The Essential and Original all enjoy an aggregated 4.7/5 stars, while the X stands tall at a staggering 4.9/5 (although there aren’t too many reviews to pull from).
Speaking about her Essential mattress, Teyah from Sydney states:
“This mattress has saved my neck and back from so much pain other mattresses have seemed to make worse, being pregnant i bought this mattress because i couldn’t put up with the pain much longer and i’m so glad i did, i’ve been getting the best sleeps and no longer waking up with a sore back, wish i bought one sooner i cannot fault it one bit !!”
Dentisa, also from Sydney, is amazed by her Original mattress’ miraculous pain relieving capabilities:
“My husband was away for a few months and had a back injury, when he came back, after 6 weeks sleeping on that mattress, he said that the back pain almost disappeared. I would recommend Onebed mattress, it is worth investing in your health.”
Finally, M. Hayes from Manuka can’t wait for bed-time thanks to his Onebed X:
“Sleep has been Fantastic! Even if one of us is restless, the other one can now sleep undisturbed. I look forward to jumping in to bed every night! Cant wait to get to bed tonight!”
Each of the three mattress offerings provided by Onebed brings something different to the table, whether it be simplicity, customizability or luxury. While the Essential mattress is clearly the inferior of the three, it’s still a fantastic product and well worth the price. For just a bit more cash, though, you can get your hands on two stellar mattresses that’ll leave you cool, comfortable and undisturbed. The Original is a top choice for customizability, while the X is a luxurious hybrid mattress that boasts the highest-quality materials.
Your personal values, budget and comfort requirements will determine which of the three is best for you, but we’re sure you’ll be happy with whichever one you pick!
